During the 2020 era of Covid, I was desperately trying my hardest to not be basic. My closet was a fusion of Kurt Cobain and wanna-be indie, brands of Converse, Doc Martin, and of course whatever I could find under the “Tik Tok” search on Amazon. Even dying my hair black and pushing down my wants to listen to Taylor Swift. I so badly wanted to be this cool version of myself and be different from the other girls around me, it was borderline misogynstic. One thing though was that I was extremely unhappy not letting myself be who I actually was. After a few years, I finally came to terms with the fact that my outfits were ugly and listening to angsty music all the time will make you depressed. I decided to embrace who I truly was, which is a target obsessed, trend following, brandy melvile lover, and pop music enthusiast. People need to understand that the term “basic” is just another way to shame girls for liking popular things because they are happy. Why do we need to label and berate girls who just love and accept themselves?
